From the recording I Can't Sleep

Back in college, when I started dating Tamara Gibbs Mecham, I came home one night and announced to my roommate Michael Mollenhauer that I was going to marry her. He just laughed and said, "Look at you! You're skinny and short. She could have anyone. She's probably not going to think of you as husband material." Well, he was wrong! It's 50 years later, and those thoughts have been rolling around in my head for all this time. It seemed appropriate at this time to write a song about it.

Lyrics

I can’t sleep, I’m wide awake
Thinking about our last date
I didn’t know what else to do
So I almost thought about asking you

I asked my roommate He’s said not on your life
There’s just no way she’ll be your wife
Just look at you I heard him say
She won’t think of you that way

Chorus
You're skinny. You’re short
You’re just not the right sort
For someone as beautiful as she
Dream on my friend, it just can’t be

I took a hard look right in the glass
It’s true I just don’t have the class
That it would take to make her mine
I could use a hand from the divine

But in my heart, I knew the truth,
Feelings strong, since our youth.
I'll prove him wrong, just wait and see,
For love, sometimes, defies reality.

Chorus
You're skinny. You’re short
You’re just not the right sort
For someone as beautiful as she
Dream on my friend, it just can’t be

I waited for what seemed like the longest time
It might take patience to make her mine.
So I thought I'd take a final chance
To make a life from this romance.

Now fifty years have come and gone
And here we sit, the lights still on
Her hand in mine, her hair now gray,
She smiles at me the same old way.

I thank the Lord I took that chance,
For love’s not looks — it’s circumstance.
Two hearts that beat in perfect time,
I’m so glad she still calls me mine.

Final Chorus
Yes, I’m not skinny, But I'm still short,
But love has been our true resort.
For someone as beautiful as she —
Dreams come true, just look at me.
